Artwork Description:
The Return of Sindbad the Sailor captures a reunion of three friends, one of whom returns from a journey—or perhaps from captivity—raising a human cranium in triumph. The others greet him with joy, gathered around a meal. To create this scene, the artist photographed himself in multiple poses, transforming his features to embody each character. As in many of Chiao’s works, black dominates the composition, with yellow, beige, and white providing subtle highlights.
