Artwork Description:
The Return of Sindbad the Sailor is a depiction of the meeting of 3 friends, upon return of one of them perhaps either from extremely long travel or even from prison. He is holding the human cranium above his head, celebrating his survival. The 2 friends are happy to see him and enjoying the meal placed on the table before them. To produce this painting the artist photographed himself in various positions and then simply altered his face and body in order to receive the characters of 3 different men. Composition, like many other paintings by Nicholaas Chiao is dominated by the black color, and yellow, beige, and white are present as small accents in the black.
