Artwork Description:
This composition is a Jan Vermeer-inspired exercise in figurative painting. It depicts a middle-aged man sleeping by the wealthy decorated table with a fruit and vegetable meal. The composition as usual for Nicholaas Chiao is dominated by the black with splashes of creamy whites and red ocher to model the surface of the fruits and figure of man.
