Artwork Description:
This painting was inspired by a surrealist canvas seen in the Diary of One Genius by Salvador Dali, by Czech painter F. Janoushek. The masterwork was featuring the cliffs with a beautiful sculpture of a woman imminently appearing from the rocks. In his version, Nicholaas Chiao places people in the museum in the foreground, and upon removing the walls of an art gallery he inserts the same rocky mountain in the background of that painting. The inserted rocks are a clear reminder of sculptures of giant heads, of nudes, and of female breasts. It creates interesting surreal tensions between the background and figures in the foreground. Dali, by the way, was an undeniable authority for the Chiao, and his Diary was read and reread by him many times.
