Artwork Description:
A surrealist canvas inspired this painting, which Chiao encountered in Salvador Dalí’s Diary of One Genius, featuring the work of Czech painter F. Janoushek. The original masterwork depicted cliffs with the striking likeness of a woman emerging from the rocks. Adapting this motif, Nicholaas Chiao situates museum visitors in the foreground while, by removing the gallery walls, he inserts the same rocky mountain as the background. The inserted rocks, populated by visual echoes of giant heads, nudes, and mythical beasts, generate surreal tensions between natural and constructed realities. By blending the museum context with dreamlike imagery, Chiao links the act of viewing art to broader questions about perception and the boundaries between reality and imagination. Dali, notably, was a formative influence for Chiao; his Diary was read and reread by the artist many times.
